Ivy

An early morning in family court led to a late afternoon when a lunch meeting with a client ran longer than expected. Our client, Mr. Ludwell, is the wealthy owner of one of the new boutique casinos just off the strip and he has decided to trade in his wife of twenty years for his girlfriend of the same age. Typical.

After the meeting I walk to my car carrying a stack of legal pads filled with enough notes to keep me busy for weeks, and a throbbing headache.

I toss my things in my passenger seat and take a few seconds to close my eyes before the drive home. But there on the backs of my eyelids I see the same gray eyes I’ve been seeing since last night, sparkling with humor, as they look down at me. It’s this very vision that kept me awake all night, along with a dry mouth and throbbing head. I owe the latter two to the vodka.

“I’m so stupid.” I kissed Henry last night. On the lips! What if he has a girlfriend? I didn’t even ask. This is the thought that has been making me sick all day.

I put my car in drive and head away from the hotel while rehearsing the speech I plan to deliver to Henry when I see him next.

“What I did was wrong for so many reasons. Now you see why I don’t like getting drunk.” I cringe at how awful those words sound out loud compared to how they sounded in my head. “My God, I even told him I was taking advantage of him.” I turn onto a side street in the hope that it’ll lead me to the freeway. “What kind of a person does that?”

I slow when something familiar catches my eye.

Henry’s black pickup. And it’s parked beneath a sign that reads Eternal Ink.

Without a thought to do so, I turn into the lot and park next to the black truck. I watch through the glass doors to see only a few people moving around inside.

I startle at a knock on my window and turn to see one of the guys I met at Henry’s party smiling down at me.

“Ivy?”

I roll my window down. “Isaiah, hi.”

“I thought that was you. Are you coming in?” He jerks his head toward the shop.

If I say yes, I’ll be forced to see Henry. If I say no, I’ll out myself for stalking. “I am.” I shut off the car and grab my purse, accepting my fate for the lesser of two evils.

“That was a fun party last night,” Isaiah says as we walk together across the parking lot. “Why haven’t I seen you at any of Henry’s parties before?” He opens the door for me.

“We only recently became friends.” When I walk inside I’m hit with cool air and rock music. “And don’t let what you saw last night fool you. I’m not much of a partier.”

A sultry brunette behind the circular reception desk in the middle of the room greets me with a smile.
